Missional Community
January 28, 2008 by jonathanbrink
A friend of mine recently told me that he wished he could find what we had in high school. My heart went out to him because there was a deep loneliness from the lack of connection, even in the midst of a small group. I could see on his face that he was longing for something more than just the right answer or another Bible study. He was looking for something that brought a deeper form of community and meaning. What was interesting is that I’ve heard this before, over and over and over again.
In the summer of 2002 a group of my friends gathered together to see if we could find a different way. We were not interested in a traditional Bible study and we knew all the “right” answers. To be honest, we wanted to follow Jesus. And so we set out to discover what that looked like in today’s world. A long the way we took notes and asked a thousand questions. We looked at what those around us were doing and what Jesus had done. And in the process we discovered a deep sense of community, but one with a purpose.
And at one point, someone said, “We have food and it is good.” We knew that what we had discovered was not new but thousands of years old. It was a missional discipleship community. And we knew very quickly that this discovery was not meant just for us. It was meant for those courageous souls who also wanted to tread in the footsteps of Jesus. So we created Thrive Ministries.
Thrive is a missional discipleship experience for small groups of people who are looking for something deeper and more fulfilling in their journey of faith. We’ve created everything you need to develop a missional discipleship community in your small group. And we’re here to help you process the journey through training and support. We’re looking for courageous leaders who would like to take the risk and discover what it means to follow Jesus in today’s world.
