Hey Jude is my favorite Beatles song, but the other day I listened to this song while in a deeply reflective mood. And it hit me. There is a significant power is letting things be. My firstly instinctive reaction is not always my best. When I sit with things and let my emotions subside, I usually make better judgments. And I’ve also noticed that when I let things just be, it doesn’t affect me like when I stew on it, and try and change things. There is a resonance to living with reality.

Thanks Paul.

What’s your favorite Beatles song?

There is a brilliance to this song. I’ll let you share what you see in it.

————————————————————————

Can’t make my own decisions or make any with precision
Well, maybe you should tie me up so I don’t go where you don’t want me
You say that I’ve been changing, that I’m not just simply aging
Yeah, how could that be logical?
Just keep on cramming ideas down my throat

Wo-o-o-ho-oh

You don’t have to believe me
But the way I, way I see it
Next time you point a finger
I might have to bend it back
Or break it, break it off
Next time you point a finger… I’ll point you to the mirror

If God’s the game that you’re playing
Well, we must get more acquainted
Because it has to be so lonely… to be the only one who’s holy
It’s just my humble opinion, but it’s one that I believe in
You don’t deserve a point of view, if the only thing you see is you

Wo-o-o-ho-oh

You don’t have to believe me
But the way I, way I see it
Next time you point a finger
I might have to bend it back
Or break it, break it off
Next time you point a finger… I’ll point you to the mirror

This is the last second chance
(I’ll point you to the mirror)
I’m half as good as it gets
(I’ll point you to the mirror)
I’m on both sides of the fence
(I’ll point you to the mirror)
Without a hint of regret… I’ll hold you to it

I know you don’t believe me
But the way I, way I see it
Next time you point a finger
I might have to bend it back
Or break it, break it off
Next time you point a finger… I’ll point you to the mirror

I know you won’t believe me
But the way I, way I see it
Next time you point a finger
I might have to bend it back
Or break it, break it off
Next time you point a finger… I’ll point you to the mirror

This is one of my favorite songs for meditation and prayer. Peace to you.

Broken conversations, broken people, we’re broken Lord.
Terrified illusions, seeking comfort, we’re seeking more.
We need each other more than we need to agree.
Father, Son, Spirit bless us with your love,
with your grace and peace.

Peace.
Let there be peace.
Let there be peace.
Let there be peace.

Let us see and not destroy. Let us listen. Let us listen.
Let us suspend judgement for the sake of love, for the sake of love.
We need each other more than we need to agree.
Father, Son, Spirit bless us with your love,
with your grace and peace.

Love.
Let there be love. (among us)
Let there be love. (among us)
Let there be love.

I was thinking about how much I love music. And one of the things I’m drawn to is the human expression of spirituality in music. So I thought I’d create a list of songs that I think are deeply spiritual, expressing an element of the Spirit, but are not particularly religious. I love listening to really good music that expresses a sense of humanity, a search for God, and a desire to be human. These are just some of the songs that come to mind as I look at my iTunes.

Just Breathe – Pearl Jam

Kings & Queens – 30 Seconds To Mars

Not Afraid – Eminem

Mercy Street – Peter Gabriel

Pocket Full Of Sunshine – Natasha Bedingfield

Show Me What I’m Looking For – Carolina Liar

Every Day Is Exactly The Same – Nine Inch Nails

One Day – Matisyahu

Secrets – One Republic

Pieces – Red

Overcome – Creed

You Found Me – The Fray

The Sound Of Madness – Shinedown

I’m sure there are a bazillion songs to add to this list. I think we are inherently spiritual human beings no matter what our faith.

What would you add to the list?

This is my new favorite song. And I have Sarah to thank for it. Matisyahu is a poet in the deepest sense of the word. I love the rhythm he brings to the imaginative idea of reconciliation, lifting up humanity and dignity and dreaming about a world without war.

My favorite line is: Sometimes in my tears I drown, but I never let it get me down. So when negativity surrounds I know some day it’ll all turn around.
