Getting In Touch With Your Emotions

Today I’m starting a new series of posts on Fridays called, Getting In Touch With Your Emotions.  In my work with coaching people, I often find that people are afraid to feel.  In learning to avoid the negative emotions that produce pain, we inadvertently learn to turn off our emotions entirely.  Much of the journey as a human being is often relearning how to feel.

Each week, I will post a photo and ask two questions.  What is the emotion you see in the photo?  What do you think is the story behind the emotion?

Engage with me.

When I looked at the photograph I immediately saw the anticipation of something in his face. Like he’s waiting for “the other shoe to drop.” He’s got that face that tells me he thinks he’s about to receive some difficult news…he’s about to be fired, his teenage daughter is pregnant, his parents are ill, etc. The furrowed brow speaks volumes to me. My father had that look a lot while I was growing up. Whenever anyone asked him to sit down because they had news to share, that’s the look he’d get.

fear anger, sadness, regret…but I think many times we feel and experience some of these emotions before we need to. Anticipation=anxiety. I used to live life waiting for the other shoe to drop and would look at even a good opportunity or situation in my life and immediately think about “the end” or how bad it might turn out, and then be shocked when it ended up that way. I think our emotions can lead us to negativity that’s just unnecessary.
