What Restores Your Soul?

A friend of mine recently said, “I came to this conference for soul care.”  When I heard that it resonated with me.  I too had come not just for the speakers and event, but for the nurturing soul care that happens when I gather with people who reflect love.  Sometimes I need to receive. And it made me wonder.

What restores your soul?  What do you do or encounter or practice that feeds you and gives you soul care?

The things that restore my soul are shared laughter, worship, serving others out of my God-given call, quiet moments of meditation, being by water, and one of my favorite things right now, “soaking” music.

Being in the garden in the early morning. The birds, the squirrels, our dogs, a hot cup of coffee, weeding, and letting my mind wander. Can I hear the sounds from the highway a quarter mile away? Yes, if I focus on them. But, I can also hear a hawk calling to its young, geese and ducks in the pond across the street and God in the wind whispers. This week was all about mulching and spiritual discernment. A very nice combo, really.

Oh, and that recent video about the love of dog. I've been sharing that with everyone! Beautiful, painful, disquieting, yet soul-restoring.

Oooh good laughter. I sometimes wonder how the Spirit of God moves through our laughter.

My window to my bedroom is next to my backyard and every once in a while I sit and listen to the birds and the wind and the hum of the morning. Its beautiful.

Mulching and spiritual discernment. Sounds about right. ;-P

Natural beauty. When I get out in God's gorgeous creation, my soul is nourished.

Good conversation with emotionally safe people – the extrovert in me loves that.

Really hearing another (like today, I had the privilege of listening to Chris Tse live, along with a couple other spoken word performers. Their performances were deeply moving as they were so informed by their personal stories. *That* fed my soul!)

When the Holy Spirit breaks in and gives me an entirely new perspective/interpretation of my circumstances or in response to the questions brewing in my heart. That gives rest to my soul. Always is refreshing and always increases peace.

Most often it comes through time alone. A long bike ride, hike in the mountains, worship. Other times it comes unexpected through a smile, laughter or a weekend with the guys.

I go two ways to restore my soul. The first is towards good relationships. Nothing restores me better than being with a good friend or someone who is dear to me. The second is by quieting myself down and engaging in God’s creation around me. Though I doesn’t sound similar to the first one it really is. It’s engage God in relationship through his creation or by quieting oneself so one can hear God better.

It does not seem to me that there is nothing that produces soul care but the Holy Spirit. Nothing of the world–laughter, gardens, solitude, friends–has that power. “To will and to do.” With this grace, I stumble over the restorative in everything and everywhere. There is no way to seek in things, such as particular behaviors, practices, people, or places. It is wholly a gift, a result of surrender and not of pursuit.
