Is Christianity A System Of Belief?

Earlier today I posted about Peter Senge, who said:

“I think it’s because Buddhism presents itself as a way of life, and Christianity presents itself as a system of belief.”

I posted it because in many ways it caught my attention.  Sometimes perception is reality.  We read Christianity primarily through the lens of belief as opposed to a way of life.

And then Ken Silva posted a comment and said:

“I think it’s a tired old straw man who needs to retire.”

At first I had a sense of pushback, given that I think Peter is on to something. And the reason I say that is because if you visit virtually any church website, the primary means of defining the community is the list of beliefs.  We fight over doctrinal positions and interpretations the same way my dog chews on a ham hock, with every ounce of our being.

But a friend of mine suggested that at the same time Ken is also on to something.  Both are in essence correct. Christianity is seen and even presented as a system of belief, but it is not.  Christianity is then seen as a strawman, which kind of suggests why a lot of people I know complain about the state of the church.  We know we love Jesus, but we’re not really interested in what it means to follow.

What do you think?  Which side do you fall on, or both?

“We read Christianity primarily through the lens of belief as opposed to a way of life.”

Respectfully, and yes this is really me. ;-)

Everyone's “way of life” flows from what he believes, even Buddhists. I don't think there's really any way around this, however.

Never doubted it for a minute Ken. And maybe, just maybe someday I'll get you to post your picture for all of us to see. ;-P

“…just maybe someday I'll get you to post your picture for all of us to see.”

    Wha? That is my picture.

Seriously though, I explained in a post a while back that there is no picture because my wife has asked me not to post any.

My guess, since I have the perfect face for radio, is that she doesn't want people to think she really has no taste.

If you ever feel the need to share with the world your lovely face, don't hesitate to send me your picture Ken and I'll post it. I'd love to see who I've been talking with.

Being a Christ Follower is a way of Living. A system of belief may be something that those deeply concerned about theology may discuss. But those concerned about Loving God and Loving people are more concerned with following Jesus as a way of living.

Thats not to say that our study of Gods Word is not extremely important as it reflects who Jesus is and how we live as Christ followers. So yes knowing and understanding the Word of God is key.

I don't want to leave the impression that those who are more into theology are missing somthing and are not Christ Followers as we all are & must be concerend about correct doctrine and know why we believe what we believe. So we can be sure that what we believe to be true is really true and live it out.

    So I guess it's both…..

David, I think one helps inform the other. Our theology is informed by the Scriptures, which are made more real by our experience and reasoning.
