Straight From The Horses Mouth

“I’ve always wondered why people who believe in total depravity say things to their kids like “good job” when they catch a baseball. Shouldn’t they say something like you caught the ball, but you still deserve to go to hell?”

Donald Miller

I love Donald Miller’s humor.  He always find a way to bring out the absurdity.

I loved that too, in fact I was going to tweet it this morning, but it's just too long to condense. The picture with the post was perfect.

Well Jonathan, the Calvinist's short answer would be that “good job,” is an example of common grace, which everyone has(Jesus commented that even pagans (who might sacrifice their firstborn to Molech) do good things for their other kids, right?). Efficacious grace is another thing altogether, which would require another discussion.

    Jonathan,

You left out the part where Miller is corrected on his understanding of what Calvinists mean by “total depravity” and then admitted that what they mean by it “made more sense.” The absurdity was with Miller's own misunderstanding.
