It’s Not About You

I’m looking for some feedback.  Yesterday Reggie McNeal made the assertion that, “we are not the point.”  Yet the entire story of Scripture is God’s working to redeem US.  What say you?

I can see it either way. I preached a sermon once called, “It’s not about you.” What I meant was that we can get so selfish about things, we forget there are other people in this world besides us. We tend to make selfish, self-centered decisions most of the time and forget that we aren’t the center of the universe.nnOn the other hand, you make a good point too. God did redeem us and save us by His Son. He did it for His glory and for our salvation. We are His workmanship and He loves us dearly. He revealed Himself to us and lavishes us with a great love.nnSo, either way, I suppose, depending on context.

Ray, although I do really understand your point about pride, I think our culture often produces the very thing we don’t want it to.u00a0 And this is because we spend so little time helping people get restored, that they have little energy to do anything other than focus on the self.

Point: The word conjures up images of things that stick up, stick out and differentiate. This point affirms that. That point denies this. This point is different from that point. I agree with her point but disagree with his point. People and communities are degraded when they are made to be the object of points like these.nnGet my point?

I get what you are saying Kevin but the mission of God does have an intent, which is the restoration of all creation.u00a0 We can extend that out to make the point the glory of God, but the real mission is about restoring people.
