Social Media’s Impact

Popout

This video really struck me.  The statistics can’t be ignored.  Social media is changing our lives whether we like it or not.  It’s a phenomenon that is fundamentally shifting culture.  A couple of things that really stood out to me.

  • Social media has overtaken porn as the #1 activity on the web.
  • 1 out of 8 couples married in the US last year met through social media.
  • Facebook reached 100 million users in 9 months.
  • It’s a truly global phenomenon.

I am not a critic of social media like some.  I think the stereotype of Twitter, although humorous, misses the point about why it can be valuable. Clay Shirky said, “Our social tools are turning love into a renewable building material.” I tend to agree.  We’re so disconnected in our normal lives that social media is giving us a perspective and experience of something our traditional tools for connection have failed to deliver.
