The coolest thing I heard today:
“If you want the truth, hire someone who had no vested interest in the outcome.”
Matt Casper calls them “insultants”.
I have a brother-in-law (my favorite) who works for organizations and the government as a labor negotiator. One of his clients calls him, “the paid insultant.”
What I learned when my wife and I went from consultants to staff (briefly) at a very large church was that once we were on staff, we were no longer listened to by the senior leader(s). One this husband and wife team “owned us”, they no longer needed to listen to us. The ending was very said, very painful and, unfortunately, very predictable.
I understand the attraction to “outsourcing” this difficult process — after the “insultants” have done their work, they go away and don’t have to deal with the relational repercussions.
But what a sad commentary on our lack of commitment to humbly listen to one another with respect so that we can speak the truth to one another in love
Really sad.
Bill … we were posting at the same time from the same sad perspective.
Actually, I was a minute ahead of you. But, then again, I’m in a timezone three hours ahead of you - so - does that mean that you were actually 2 hours and 59 minutes ahead of me?
Silliness aside, you are bang on, Peggy. We appear to not be willing to hear the truth in love from those around us. “The truth” has to come from outside or we don’t/won’t listen. But, I would add, that really all we do is “listen” to that supposed truth and just keep on our merry way.
Bill … hehehe … when I started typing, there were no comments. Yet when I posted, there your comment was… it is a mystery! ;^)
Oh that we would desire to be a bit more Hebraic … so that listening also means hearing, which also includes a proper response to other members of the Body of Christ. It doesn’t do much good to go to the doctor if you’re not in tune with what’s going on in your own body….
The sad thing is also true in business. The joke was also famous in business circles that the CEO just liked to hire a consultant because that is what the board told him to do, but he rarely acted on what he was told.
