For God So Judged The World
May 4, 2008 by jonathanbrink

John 3:16 - “For God so judged the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
Oh wait…it doesn’t say that does it. Maybe it really is about love.

Yep … gotta love love … now what do you suppose that sentence means? It’s hard to read without preconceived notions and even harder to read outside the context of the whole of Scripture.
I look forward to finding out after it’s all over.
Here’s a question that hopefully will not start too much trouble. What is it about judging that is disdainful to you (I hope I am not wrongly characterizing your thought)? Is judging inherently bad or is it simply the way we have seen judgment executed?
I ask because I feel no negative reaction to your play on Jn 3.16, yet clearly you are poking at something.
Rick, I know your heart. No worries.
I wrestle with the judgmental attitude of so many people, especially fundamentals who feel it is their job to judge the world. I think it’s missing the point. Even Jesus said, I come not to condemn but to save.
To me, judgment is exclusively God’s (not discernment).
I was actually being facetious to a certain extent of the obviousness of that verse. Yet it is soooooo easy to forget.
I know there is a bent within humanity to judge, for a lot of reasons. It just doesn’t work though.
Thanks for the clarification.
I had the perception that some react to the aspect of God as judge because of (1) their own rebellion and/or (2) because of the ugliness many live in claiming to judge on God’s behalf.
So I agree with your assessment but wanted to guard against throwing out a truth (i.e., God as Judge) because of our abuse (i.e., man as judge).
