Awesome stuff, Jonathan.
Thanks for kickstarting these discussions.

I've been trying to pinpoint the moments were I began thinking of the christian mission more holistically and I am having trouble really "nailing it to the wall". A host of conversations, mentors, books, songs, and doubts (maybe the most important) have conspired against me in the last few years to change me into something that - at least from this vantage point - seems to be more beautiful. I look back on my gnostic, acidic faith from earlier years and almost cry. I have so much hope these days while at the same time being overwhelmed by the mass of pain all around. This is a very good time to be alive.

Jonathan,

I think this line speaks volumes that the church - especially leaders - needs to hear: "I began to see that my own restoration was intimately tied to the restoration of those around me." Thanks for organizing the synchroblog, and thanks for a great post!

in church, bible college, seminary, etc we've been taught that we are to carry Christ to all of these places: the world, our homes, work, the hospital room of the dying, the funeral of the saved and lost, and into the pulpit....we are told and taught "to be Jesus"...after completely burning a hole in our souls from trying to accomplish that we tend to blame ourselves or try harder and wear out. to me, missional living is understanding being aware of the fact that He is already in those places...and it's His ministry, not ours. Per Andrew Purves, missional living is us becoming the fingers that point to Him.

Wow, we said the same thing with different words. Now I really feel funny about having nicked your image. Great post. yes, missional living is about trust - those verses we were all so good at quoting, but horrible at living, say it all so well: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths!"
