A friend of mine sent me this but I don’t know who wrote it. Its a sobering reminder that God used broken people to accomplish His mission of restoration and reconciliation. God chose to love, even when we didn’t deserve it.

One of my favorite stories in Scripture is the Parable of the Prodigal Son. Some call it the parable of the Loving Father. And easily missed is the story of other son.
I don’t think the story is complete without the other son. He provides so much emotion and context for how people [...]

“I think this idea we are to render unto Caesar’s what is Caesar’s is an interesting one. And I think a lot of time we miss the point of what Jesus was doing there. I think Jesus is spinning everything on its head and calling into question what is Caesar’s. Caesar can have his [...]

There are some things about being a follower of Jesus that are really hard to deal with. They don’t provide easy answers, even when we want them to be easy. The following passage below of “The Sheep and The Goats” is one of those. This is the one people typically point to [...]

Laughing At Ourselves

I have a friend in my life who makes me laugh absolutely every time I see him. He’s hysterically funny. And his humor is often centered in making fun of himself or doing some caricature that is hilarious. In a crowded room he can take over, capturing people’s attention.
And I realized that [...]

Moby has a new album Last Night out which I haven’t heard yet, so I was listening to Play. Too many good songs on one album. In looking Moby up I found this,
“I can’t really know anything. Having said that, though, on a very subjective level I love Christ. I perceive Christ to [...]

“The Kingdom of God is bigger than your denomination.”
“Here’s what it boils down to with the emerging church thing. I don’t lie about people. I’m not perfect. I probably have my nauances and stuff, but I think one of the things people within the emerging church would say is I [...]

Kenneth Blanchard once said, “The key to successful leadership today is influence, not authority.” We don’t like that do we? But organically it makes sense.
Authority is about control and forcing people to do what we want. It’s about getting our way often at the expense of other people. It’s about head down, butt [...]

Tonight was our Emergent cohort meeting. And it was good for me in a lot of ways that I was able to express some of the deeply held ideas and beliefs that have been brewing inside of me. Here is some of what I said.

The church system is designed to produce dependency on [...]

Blue Like Elvis has this great quote from a guy I don’t know. But I like it.
“If we act like a denomination, we become irrelevant.” BGCT Executive Director, Randel Everett
At the heart of mission is restoration of relationship. And by default, denominations create barriers to relationship. Our role is to become so [...]

I’d like your input on something.  This question arises out of the dialog between Chuck Colson, Greg Boyd, and Shane Claiborne, who met on Krista Tippett’s show Speaking of Faith.  I think this dialog is a great sample of the dialog within the greater context going on within the church. Leave it to public radio [...]

Raydio Retro Talent Show

My daughter is doing the school talent show and it brought back memories. When I was in fourth grade I did this song. It was called Jack and Jill by Ray Parker Jr. and Raydio. I actually won.
What’s your talent show memory?

Jake Bouma called me subversive. He even gave me an award for it. I won it for this post, Top 50 Possible Reasons Why You’re Not Emergent.
Subversive is an interesting word.
sub·ver·sive adjective, tending to subvert or advocating subversion, esp, in an attempt to overthrow or cause the destruction of an established legally constituted government.

So I’m watching this commercial for a company that provides “cash” loans that you “call” to use their services. It’s a stupid commercial but it was live on my DVR so I had to sit through it. And then the fine print comes up. And it says,
“The APR for a typical loan [...]
