Playing Jesus

This is one of my all time favorite songs and the only version of a U2 song that is better than the original. And Vanderleun got me thinking.

Have you come here for forgiveness?
Have you come to raise the dead?
Have you come here to play Jesus
To the lepers in your head?

There is a temptation in love to become someone’s savior, to be their Jesus.  When we love it is possible for someone to see us as their savior.  But as Bono asks, is it for the lepers in our own head?  Central to love is the unconditional aspect of expecting nothing in return.  We may get something but is our expectation to receive something?  And it is when we leave our expectations at the door that I believe that God shows up in the most profound way because we leave the door open to his blessing.

  • I completely agree both about this being one of my all time favorites, and that it's the only version of a U2 song better than the original. I've been saying that same thing to a couple of friends. One of them, a fellow die hard U2 fan hates this version!! I don't get it. I think he's an atheist. :-)

Another good version is done by the band R.E.M. A more introspective version.
  • Okay Chad I listened to the R.E.M. (whatweretheythinking) version and I have one word. Highjacked.
